SAFL WEEK 1 POWER RANKINGS

1. SPARTANS (1-0)- (Last week 5) The most impressive team from week 1? Spartans without a doubt. Yes they faced a weak No Games No Gimmicks squad but they didn’t just beat them they humiliated them 32-0. The defense let maybe 1 or 2 first downs all game and the Offense moved the ball up and down with ease. The amount of speed and weapons QB Anwar has at his disposal is scary for any defense. The scary part about all this? They are still only getting better. Jose Martinez is a matchup nightmare on both sides of the ball and safeties Adil and Hashim already has great chemistry. Without some sure TD drops from his receivers QB Anwars stats would’ve looked scary.

2. SAVAGES (1-0)-(Last week 3)It sure wasn’t pretty. Bellerose Wolfpack was missing their best player in QB Bubbles and the game was still tied 12-12 with only few minutes to go. They should’ve blown this game open way before that. QB Zulfikar missed some open receivers and if it wasn’t for WR Joel Enai’s inspiring play we would be talking about SAVAGES in a different light. Their zone Defense was pretty solid as usual. One or two lucky passes by the Wolfpack but other than that the defense more than held its own.

3. EMPIRE (1-0)- (Last week 4) Led by QB/Star safety Dipan and super versatile player and Captain Shazad led their furious rally from 2 scores down. They showed their nervousness expected out of a young team in going down by 13-0 before you could even blink to a Stop N Go squad. But they didn’t fold and played their hearts out and when it was all said and done stood victorious with a 20-19 win. They played as bad as you can for the first few minutes of the game and to comeback like that showed they belong in the conversation of any talk of elite teams. They got a lot of good players and Captains Shazad and Atif has this team going in the right direction.

4. STOP N GO (0-1)-(Last week 1)- The preseason darlings fell flat on their face in opening weekend. QB Talha raced them to a early quick lead against Empire. But they looked sluggish after. Talha threw some terrible throws and they just couldn’t get anything going on offense. Defensively they looked solid and only figure to improve. Kunal and Usman looked like sure fire starters as the safety’s. Missing Suleman and Ramy sure didn’t help but this team is deep enough to win more games. Dropping them any lower than 4 doesn’t seem right at this point of the season. Captains Farhan and Usman are confident in turning this ship around.

5. SLUMDOGS (1-0)-(Last week 6)-We sure know now who these guys are. Mike Chu looked like an absolute beast at the QB position with 5 Touchdowns and that number should’ve been better if he had better receivers. They absolutely dominated an Outlaws squad. Their defense had interceptions, batted balls, sacks etc. This team sure is worth watching. Lets see how far Mike can take this team. But before anything he has to do it against an elite team before moving up the rankings any more than this.

6. BELLEROSE WOLFPACK(0-1)-(Last week 2)-Did you read Captain Niraj’s Hot Seat interview with SAFL? Yes that interview was done right before the start of the season. I wonder if he is singing a different tune now. After the game their official stance was the umpires missed many pass interference calls. Losing their starting QB days before season don’t help. Their defense looked very good keeping Savages potent attack to only 18 points and they still had a shot to win it in the end. Now there is talk of starting their third stringer in the QB position and moving last weeks starter Sandeep back into backup role. The drama only continues. Stay tuned……

7. THE BELIEVERS (1-0)-(Last week 8)- Yes they won a exciting game against the Bandits. Back and forth affair. But lets be serious here. Bandits didn’t look like an elite team. They let a good lead slip away. Lets wait a few more weeks and wins before seeing if this young and emotional team can move up the rankings. Players to watch for in this team? Jawad Khan. He absolutely went ham against the Bandits. QB Hamza would be wise to look his way often from here on out. Their defense is very shaky however. Bandits WR Harvey was able to get behind this defense almost at will. They have to tighten this up.

8. BANDITS (0-1)-(Last week 7)- Bandits couldn’t have asked for a better start. Picking up the first pass of the game then converting to go up a score against a shaken Believers squad. What happened in the second half to the defense? In the first half they looked impenetrable but in the second half they looked as leaky on defense as any team in SAFL. With athletes such as Sakib, Harvey, Mohamed, Burhan etc the results HAVE to be better against winnable games such as the one this past weekend if they want to make the playoffs. On offense Sakib is a beast and Harvey looked like an All=SAFL player but QB Burhan has to do a better job hitting them over the top for long plays.

9. NO GAME NO GIMMICKS (0-1)-(Last week 9)- The bottom two of the power rankings are interchangeable. Both looked terrible. Spartans absolutely dominated this team. Time of possession, turnovers, first downs, completions…you can go on and on about all the stats Spartans dominated. QB Salman looked like a deer caught in headlights. He didn’t even know what hit him. The defense was terrible save Khuram who actually picked the ball of twice. Khuram just might be the most physically gifted player in the SAFL. Only if there was a QB that can constantly get him the ball in a good position. Rumors have this team making big changes this week for the rest of the season but we’ll just wait and see.

10. OUTLAWS (0-1)-(Last week 10)- QB Sony Singh put their defense in terrible position by throwing 3 picks to start the game. The defense looked terrible and dysfunctional. Half the time they didn’t know what was called on defense. Zone or Man? Once Jeremy took over as QB things looked better but they need a lot more practice time to figure out how to get better. Vish Jain didn’t exactly look Nnamdi out there coming in with so much hype. They were seen practicing well after their game was over. So hopefully they can come back and come back stronger starting this upcoming weeks match up with No Game No Gimmicks.
