The SAFL Buzz - Pre Season Edition

1) Stop N' Go does not seem like the well oiled machine we expected so far. Yes Ramy is out injured but this team is too good to be blown out in Preseason by Savages. Yes Savages are an elite team on their own right, but a blowout? Come on. The most dissapointing thing about Stop N' Go has been their quarterback play. Whether its been Talha, Farhan or Usman they need to correct this ASAP because turnovers against elite teams like Savages in the regular season will really hurt. Maybe the pressure of being ranked #1 in SAFL's preseason rankings is getting to them. But that shouldnt be the case with a team full of veterans. Well it is only the preseason so we will see how this translate in the regular season.

2) Talking about Savages, they go and blow out Stop N' Go and then get spanked by a young and upcoming team in Spartans 32-6. Really? And yes the score is indicative of exactly how the game was. Qb Zulfikar threw some costly picks and Spartans defense made him look so terrible that Savages put in their backup QB Pankaj in during the second half. Spartans look dangerous with their speed and will be a tough matchup for any team. QB Anwar looked sharp and defensive captain Jose made all the right calls at the right time and even chipped in with a interception he returned for a pick six. Spartans have Pro-Bowl level talent all over the field and its only a matter of time before they look to wrestle away the top spot in the standings from any other team.

3) Slumdogs were dealt a crucial blow as their starting QB might not play with them after all due to prior committments. And we all know QB is the most important position on the field. In their preseason game against Stop N' Go they already looked out of place in a matchup with an elite team and with this new development they look like they ll be fighting to stay out of the bottom of the standings than fighting for the top. But we all know Munesh and Joshil are veteran captains and surely have a couple of tricks up their sleeves.

4) Maybe Empire can lend Slumdogs a QB from their stable of Qb's. I mean if your missing Chris Mui who can lead the league in passing, you have Dipan and Shazad waiting in the wings. How good it is to have depth in this league. They looked really really good even for their first scrimmage against a depleted Bandits squad. This is a team to watch out for and the rest of the league will surely take notice in this team filled with talent. And they do have Ahmed G. on their roster cheering on the boys as the boys do damage on the field.

5) Ahh the Bandits. The team that probably has done the most practice and scrimmage before the season starts. Will it pay off? Well captain and QB Burhan really really likes his team so we will see. Everybody is raving about Harvey's play so far so we know he will get a lot of attention from the defense as defenses will try to let other receivers beat them. This will be a interesting team to watch throughout the season as they even bought in a coach to help them out in some of their games.

6) There were some confusion about the field. The field SAFL games will be held on is Cantiague Field Multi Field O. Its right next to the turf fields. It is a grass field so wear your cleats. Turf fields cost double so maybe the league will play in Turf in later seasons if Captains agree. As of now the fields are level and even so all signals are a go. Cant wait to see some of these receivers lay out and make some diving catches.

7) The Zone defense craze. In about 80 percent of snaps, defenses chose to go to a variation of zone defenses. There were very little amount of man to man defense so far. Only time we saw man to man defense was when teams wanted to do a change of pace. This is quite surprising as zone defenses take quite a while to master in practice. We will see what defenses teams go to during crunch time.

8) Shoutout to NFL in their tribute to 9/11. Very well done. The game action was exciting as well with thrilling finishes in Saints-Packers, Jets-Cowboys games etc. Is there a better season than football season?

9) Did anyone say fantasy SAFL league?
